How to convert PDF text to outlines without Illustrator

I need to open PDF artwork but I don't have the fonts so they get changed to others in Illustrator. When I open the file in OSX Preview they are fine, is there any way to convert the text to outlines in Preview or any other way on a Mac? This often happens on weekends or public holidays where I can't contact the customer so if there's another way without buying the fonts it would be great.

You have illustrator but don't want to use it, or you don't have Illy?
If you do have Illy you can use it to open the pdf without the fonts changing out.
You open a new layout and "place" the pdf into the workspace with the "link" box checked instead of opening or dragging it into the workspace.
Then under the "object" tab select "flatten transparency" with the checkbox to outline all text selected.
Should work - some times in may fail if there is some spot color or effect under the text.
There are several threads here that cover this tip.
If you don't have Illustrator you can do it in Acrobat Pro.
It's a little more complicated, if you have pro it's easy to find the steps online.

Export the file from preview as a pdf, then open it in illustrator. Fonts will be outlined.
Also if you get word or pages or other types of files from all over creation, and they open in preview and you need to print them, export or save them as a .jpg and place in illy, and print away.

PS Preview is a VERRY powerful secret weapon in my arsenal. If you can view the file in preview, you can run it through your printer as a .jpg

Thanks for that but how do I "place" it without opening or dragging it and where is the link box?

Thanks Mainframe but that isn't working either. I also use Preview a lot but that isn't working.

Oh man I got so much farther to go in illy than I'd like to admit. Why did I wast so much time in photoshop and so afraid of the pen tool?

I always beat down the door saying I need an ai file or the world will blow up. I sort of get the jist of this I use pc but I suppose the concept is the same.

if you've got acrobat pro you can do it by adding a water mark at 0% opactity then going to print production and then selecting "flattener preview", a box will open with a tick box option to "convert all text to outlines", tick it and click apply, then save the file. Unfortunately with the various versions of acrobat all the buttons and tabs have moved around a bit. For some reason selecting convert all text to outlines without the watermark wont work.

the steps:
• Edit
• Watermark
• Add (type any character)
• under "appearance" set to 0% opacity
• click OK
• Print production
• Flattener preview
• tick "convert all text to outlines" box
• Apply
• OK
• save the file (I always save as the original file name with the word outlines on the end so as not to save over the original)

Hope this helps.
