I saw something like that used at a golf course to keep Canada Geese at bay. They were coyote cutouts and for a split second when I first saw it my heart jumped into my throat!!!

At one course they actually had a stuffed wolf with teeth barring next to a pond and again while driving up I caught a glimpse and near died thinking it was coming at me!!

I wonder how long they work for before the birds catch on

they don't work very long before the birds catch on because the "stuffeds" don't move much....here in my low country the crows go for the eyeballs first....

lol try putting hay over it -- helps keep birds off and moisture in to grow --- or we have issues in our mulch with neighborhood varmets, go to Sams Club or Walmart and grab a big tub of Cayenne pepper. Sprinkle that around and there will be no bothers hehe

Burlap, is the best I have found. It serves two purposes, one keeps birds from eating it and secondly it hold moisture in.
