Illustrator CS

Does anybody know how to switch on the blur shadow in Illustrator CS, I use to have it now the box is no longer highlighted, and just give me a solid color.

You mean, effect/stylize/drop shadow

Yes in that box I can no longer shadow using the slider bar, this happened once before but I forgot what I did to get it back.
