I'm not making this up

I just had a phone call that went like this:

Hello, I'm starting my own accounting business and was wondering what you charge for logo design.

$495.00 (said as: "Four-Ninety-Five")

Four dollars and ninety five cents?.......or.....?

Um, no, four hundred and ninety five dollars. There are design firms downtown that charge thousands of dollars for logo design, so I feel that I offer a pretty good value.

Oh, ok, I'll get back to you.

Not holding my breath.

I feel an answer more along these line may have had them stop in:

"We charge as much as $3500 for a logo, but we've been known to do them for as low as $495"

Mind if I send all my logo design clients your way? Your flat rate pricing would be attractive to clients in my market and you do good work. I would rather just fill the orders for products.

Colin,

I agree...send the tire kickers on their way EARLY on. There's nothing worse than wasting two or three hours in communication (conversations, email, etc...) with a potential client who neither qualifies, nor places a value on your work.

A customer of mine, a plumber, told me about a call he got:

"My basement is filling up with water, it is about 3 feet deep ... how much is it going to cost?"

"Lots!"

"I need a firm price!"

"Call around looking for a firm price until the water reaches the top of the stairs ... then call your bank for a new mortgage!"

If you want help pricing and selling logos, I'd be willing to talk. We have three packages from $600-$1400 and we did 22 logos in 2011. I already have three logo projects for 2012. Logos are sold by communicating clearly what the designer offers. I tell most of my potential clients that the price is determined by how picky they're going to be.

Most of them hesitate, then they actually think about it. It's awesome because, most of the time, the difficult ones identify themselves. They opt to pay more so the can see more concepts.

Anyway, I won't get in to it all. Logos are a great revenue stream for us and we have really hit a stride.

838, I think your methods would be interesting for a lot of us... maybe you would want to start a thread about it. I think it could be a popular topic...
