In need of a designer

Was just playing with an idea.......

How far away is your designer from you? I mean do you mail him or is he in the office next door?

Here is my reason for asking.I need a designer on a cost per job basis.
I need someone good. Then I thought idiot......what about the designers on signs101? There are some world class designers here. Before I contact someone......will it work....I mean with me being in Africa and so far away?

The interweb makes everyone your next door neighbor. Designers can sell their stuff all over the world. Makes no difference where they're located anymore.

correcto. As long as you can communicate and send files, you can be anywhere. I do stuff for my neighbor, and for a company 2200 miles away.

I would recommend Phillip Newell (Sign Amigo), we use him for quite a few jobs, we send him payments by paypal and he sends files by email.

I sometimes get contracted out for some graphics by a couple shops back in Orlando, I just get an e-mail with a "hey, need x graphics mocked up" and they know my proofing/revision rates so they already have that worked up into their contract. that night I pump out some roughs, next day or 3 do the revisions as needed and done.

Hell, I even sub out some design work ... sometimes you just run out of ideas.

Should also note, most of my work I get is ussually for stuff like illustrations and the such ... seems like once a month I have to do some sort of plumber/carpenter/whatever character based on the owner for other sign shops. good stuff really.

The biggest thing is going to be time zones. Other then that email and/or FTP should work for transmitting files to one another.

Thank you guys. The only problem I see will be time zones as well. What will a good rate per hour be. Sorry to ask this but I just need to work the Rand /Dollar exchange rate.I f you don't want to discuss it in the open please send me a private message.

I use Jillbeans from this site. I email her the basics and receive a design the next day. Excellent designer, great service. What more can you ask for.

finding out rates and trying to match a designer to the rates is the wrong way to go.

interview designers, find their rate and try to discuss pricing as well as their turn around.

going the other way is like one of your customers coming in with a budget and trying to make the job work under cost restraints ... find out what your ideal is then go from there.
