Ink Receptivity - Science Question

James Burke

Being a grandpa is more fun than working
I've always been a fan of science and knowing the "whys" behind the hows.

What makes ink receptive vinyl work?

Does it have something to do with the structure / surface energy / density / architecture of the polymer's matrix?

Is there a difference between vinyls that have ink receptivity and (Gerber) foil receptivity?

Thanks in advance to all the really cool nerds who have any insight on this.

Most of my google searches turned up results primarily about paper coatings utilizing aqueous based inks...not much was said about vinyl

Where is Artbot when you need him?

Good question though. All I can say is the solvents in the eco-solvent ink soften/open the surface allowing the color particles to bond. Somewhat similar to auto paint where each layer bonds to the next.
