Ink rubbing off issues!

Hello,

I tried printing on vinyl for the 1st time this weekend and had some troubles. Material is Avery MPI 1005 EZ RS and the printer is Roland XC- 540 Sol-Jet Pro lll w/ Eco-Sol MAX Inks. I am having an issue with a little bit of the ink rubbing off when applying the vinyl on a flat surface and then rubbing completely off when he vinyl is stretched. Any advise or help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to install immediately or are you letting the ink dry? Ink needs to dry a bit you know.

Also, what is the application? For almost every application you need laminate over the top, which would erase this problem.

without seeing exactly what you mean by "rubbing off", one can only assume the ink is still wet and that you are not using laminate.

if you're going to still try to apply unlaminated prints, use a felt squeegee and wet it slightly since the felt can still scratch ink when rubbing too hard. you can also try applying your unlaminated prints by using premask to help avoid stretching/scratching... but at that point, why not just laminate?
if you don't want to purchase a laminator... use liquid laminate and a foam roller and you'll instantly double the value of your prints while only mildly increasing the cost of production.

I let the ink dry for a good 48hrs. I did not use a laminate and used a felt squeegee. I applied some of the vinyl on a scrap piece of alumilite and then tried to wrap my computer mouse. There was a little ink residue on the felt but obvious rub off on the vinyl from the mouse. I can post some picture later. Also will a laminate keep the vinyl from stretching when wrapping a vehicle? Any suggestions on a laminator, laminates and liquid laminates?

Yes, you need to laminate...Get ready to spend another $5,000 on a laminator!
Are you a sign shop? We use Oracal 210 and 290 laminate. Wraps need to be laminated,
pretty much everything we do (except banners and coro) is laminated.

What kind of film are you printing? Cast, Cal? Air release?

Just out of curiosity, how does one end up with an expensive piece of equipment and wrap vinyl without knowing that lamination is required??

Amen. If you do not know about lamination, you are a farrrrr ways out from trying to wrap a car. Read up on the forum here on techniques and equipment, and get setup to do it right.
