install and run a program on an external hard drive

Hey guys,

I need some help. I was contacted by a new member asking for some help. In searching through some old post, they found out that I have an older version of ArtPath (a software to run my older gerber AR router). This member asked if I could send them the a copy of the software, as their copy has been misplaced for what ever reason.

I am very hesitant to send my only copy off to someone that I don't know, but I would like to be able to help them out. The programs are on a cd, with an auto run feature, so coping them seems like that won't work. My other thought is could I install it on an external hard drive and send that to them.

The program runs off an old copy of windows 98, and being a gerber program, it requires a dongle to run, so since they have their own dongle, I don't think it is considered software piracy?

Any help is appreciated.

Most commercial CD burning softwares have a feature to duplicate a CD. You'd put the original in first... and it makes an "image" if it... and then asks you to put in a blank CD. It then takes this image, and burns it to the new CD... creating an exact duplicate.

This is of course assuming you have a CD burner! :)

There may be a way to do this in Windows natively without the use of any additional software, but to be honest... it's been so long since I have used Windows I wouldn't begin to know how.

Nero is a proven commercial solution for duplicating optical discs. ISO Recorder is donationware that may also do what you need. Your software should have a file describing your license and whether you can make copies of the discs without violating the terms of the license. A call to Gerber could also give you a clear conscience on the matter.

KNOWING GERBER.............YOUR copy.........is coded to YOUR DONGLE........ and wont run with the other guys. you could make a copy of yours.......and if the guy who needs this has someone who can edit the programs dongle coding.........for his copy.....its the only way it will work.
as for running from a external drive.........can be done as long as the program was loaded to it.....from your OS hard drive......

I applaud your efforts to help a fellow forum member, but I often wonder why people don't feel the need to invest a considerable amount of money in the tools they use to make a living (assuming they are running a business).

Even with high-end new software, the payback period can be relatively short and the return on investment substantial and long-lasting.
