Insufficient Memory Error in CS5 Illy

What can I do to stop this from happening, it has been happening more lately and currently I cannot import a file into a design because i have insufficient memory. I cannot even open the file by itself, it is only 45mb.

Is there a temp or cache folder or something that may be full that i can clear out?

any help would be appreciated.

make sure your scratch disk is different from your OS disk for one

PC or Mac?

I use a Mac mostly. Restart usually does it.

I find this happens when I have the computer and/or Illustrator open for a long period of time (weeks to a month or so) scratch disc issue - restart...

Your hard drive (scratch disc is getting full)

I have 300mb files that never do that memory thing, then will get it on a 40mb file.

Other issues...
--large pic/too many bitmap images... lower resolution or place/link bitmaps
--complicated vectors... is there a way to simplify?
--files with too many compounds, and/or clipping masks.
=--semi-complicated vector graphics while designing at large size... scale artwork to workable size.

I get this trouble when I open files with extremely high res settings in illustrator. An example would be a 18x24 sign at 1200 dpi.

Also in some cases, and this may not be your case, even small sized files that are filled with effects and filters can cripple illustrator.

I try to have at least 6 gb of memory in my design pc's

Also many aren't aware of the amount of memory adobe version cue takes up.
If you have version cue running and don't ever use it, get rid of it. You can tell if you look at your processes running or memory allocation.

By default I think version cue takes up 1gb of memory, but I might be off on that specific figure.

I am going to try to restart the comp, it has been on for a few days, perhaps that is the issue.
