Insurance Woes

We got a notice of non-renewal in the mail for our garage liability policy. Never had any claims at all, no workers comp, property, personal, nada. This is the 3rd time now in about 10 years and we have a terrible time getting coverage because of the business we are in. I don't exactly know what the issue is, we don't install, no work on others property, no vehicle repairs, no cranes, no heights, no expensive cars. We are a pretty safe bet. Anyone else deal with this?

The wash bay was likely because you have an open pit that's full of water. Insurers don't like open pits like that, oil change places and concrete washouts.
No disassembling, no frame work, no torches, no welding (on vehicles/machines), no washing. We paint and sandblast but they don't ask about blasting. We don't advertise it either. We have dealer plates but have almost everything we buy hauled in. We don't deliver customers vehicles. We don't allow test drives. There's only 2 drivers on the policy, myself and a friend of mine and we both have CDLs, clean records. I really don't get it.

I did work for banks that made me carry liability insurance. Had it for years with same company and never filed a claim.
Then I received a non renewal like you did in the mail. I went to a insurance broker which got me a new insurance company that was cheaper than what I had. Insurance companies are a strange group and when you call just get some young girl who has no idea how to do anything or answer your questions.

Are you working with a major carrier, or independent broker? I have had pretty good luck with larger independent brokers. They seem to understand how to play the game a little better and will shop more if something comes back with an issue.

We use a decent sized broker for WC and GL and then a separate broker for the property. The property is another one that we had a horrible time getting insurance for. We have surplus lines on both.
