Is clear vinyl see through?

I was doing an install on a fellow drivers race car this weekend and we were discussing windshield tear aways.

Lexan Windshields can get scratched quite easily, especially with wipers running most of the time (studded ice racing)
I know there are tear aways for helmets and windshields, but is there a clear vinly that is available that would be see through that we could use for this purpose?
I've never used clear, so I am unfamiliar with the transparancy of it.

There is a difference between clear and optically clear. You would most want optically clear, but never used it for that application, so I do not know if it would work.

We wouldn't be taking eye exams through the polycarb., but we are driving 80-90 mph on an ice surface (roadcoarse) with VERY limited visibility, so it would need to be fairly clear. Some days it's like driving with a white sheet over your windshield anyway- we have to listen for the cars around us to listen for downshifts, acceleartion points, etc.
Fun Stuff.
Speaking of which. On my way to the track now.

3M makes an anti graffiti material that basically goes on the glass and peels off in layers as they get damaged. It is called Scotchgard 1004, might work for this application.
