What part are you thinking is an upgrade?
The VP is not really much faster or better than the SP.
Overall, you'll get more bang for the buck if you get an XC model.

If you are looking, I would atleast go with the new VS-640. you won't regret having the 6 color setup if you do any real high quality printing.

is it the VP540i and is the SP540 the new SP540i or the old SP540.
From an SP540 to a VP540i is well worth the upgrade, also the VS640 about £5000 more than a VP540i new and about £8000 more than a second hand VP540 which you won't find a New VS640.
The old VP540 to the old SP540 is twice as fast.
The new VP540i to the new SP540i is twice as fast
