Question Lack of video DIY question

Good morning everyone!
I was wondering why there isn’t a lot of videos online of mimaki diy fixing everything.

Is it because MIMAKI and the lack of repair rights we have in the US? Is it just that nobody wants to take the time to do the videos? Are the video’s uploaded but taken down by mimaki?

This is a serious question that if anyone would shed some light on, it would be great!

When I am fixing a machine I dont want to film and and slow myself down explaining what I am doing. There are not really any documents out for Mimaki as they are very guarded with that stuff so a lot of what I have figured out is by watching techs while they are here.

That’s what I was thinking too… people don’t have time to record a video of themselves explaining and presenting their work. Now that my technician retired I have no other choice but to DIY.
I wanted to hear other people’s thoughts before I TRY to record the videos and then
have mimaki send me a legal letter or wonder why YouTube shut down my videos.

I’m looking to try to create my own videos.

Thanks for your reply Superior_Adam

I would not think it is against the law. It is your machine and and you are not an ex technician trying to reveal all of their trade secrets.
The Right to Repair laws differ from state to state.

Ohio currently does not have any enacted right-to-repair laws, but there has been active advocacy for such legislation. A bill, SB 73, is under consideration in Ohio, which aims to make it easier for consumers to repair their devices by requiring manufacturers to provide access to parts, tools, and service documentation. This bill covers a wide range of devices, from electronics like smartphones and laptops to appliances like refrigerators. However, it has yet to be passed into law.https://www.americanbar.org/groups/...el/summer2024-right-repair-compliance-update/

On a broader scale, right-to-repair legislation is gaining traction across the U.S., with laws already enacted in states like California, Minnesota, and New York. These laws typically focus on consumer electronics but differ in scope and enforcement mechanisms.

The only legal action Mimaki can take is protecting their tech manuals. So if you want to make a video of you fixing your printer, go right ahead, but if you give out manuals in public, they could hit you with a cease and desist. But I'm sure you've found that finding them isn't that hard anyway.

My theory on why there aren't more videos has to do who has the experience to make them. We have never made videos mostly because the printers we work on are our customer's machines. They tend not to want the tech distracted with making a video while fixing their printer. We're one of the only dealers supporting Mimaki DIY repair. Most dealers will only sell you a part if their tech is installing it. So they have no motivation to make the videos either. That leaves independent techs and they don't want to show you how to do it because then they won't get paid to do it. So there's not a lot of motivation for those who have the experience to do it.

Interesting take!

But for the technician/dealer/etc, could post it and monetize the videos… they would make residual income. Hence why I’m contemplating starting up a channel.

Would Mimaki have the right to send a cease and desist letter if the videos were covering repairs that are in the repair manuals? (My thought is no they can’t)

That's true. I've never looked into the numbers for monetization and whether it would be worth it. If you have the time and motivation, could be a nice project.

I'm no lawyer or anything but, as long as it's just you showing how you fix your machine and not displaying the manual contents on the screen. I think you're in the clear. That being said, I've never had issues with Mimaki in that regard. Roland on the other hand. . . . .

Looking at your profile, it's kinda obvious why you wanna do this. Rather than asking a buncha people who use the machines and fix them on their own, why not ask the correct kinda lawyer and have him research and then you can proceed with your request. Not knowing the end results will not hold up in court if ya tell them you THOUGHT this or that. Pay the lawyer for his time to do it by the law.
