Laminate with 3M 180

Anyone ever mix a good aftermarket laminate with the 3M 180? The 8519 is unbelievably expensive

Well, 8519 is cheaper than the 180. What would you expect? Why would you consider mismatching materials just to save a buck when in the long run it will more than likely cost you a lot more than a buck when the material fails? If you can't afford to do it the right way... there's always Arlon ;)

Hi, I use a lot of 3M 8518 gloss and Lamex 2mil cast gloss over my 3m180C v-3. They look great and work well together. Don't let the manufactures con you into believing you can ONLY use their products together. Cast is cast in this case.

As long as the laminate is a cast vinyl you will be fine, obviously it will void all your 3M warranties but Im not sure how easy it is for them to determine who's laminate you actually used. 8519 and 8518 are pretty great products though but there are a few that are more aggressive in cost. Around 0.58-0.60 is the going rate for off brand cast lams.

I use Oracal's laminate on everything, wether it's Oracal, Avery, 3M or any other brands I print on. The 290G and the 210G are great films and deliver a premium gloss level. Prices are lower than 3Ms and you get same long-term durability. 3Ms are over-priced and over-rated. It fails sometimes, like every other brands so why pay more (much more in my area... over $250 for 3m's cast combo vs. equivalent in Oracal)

'Just my $0.02...

Whatever you do, don't listen to this guy.

Lamex is G.A.R.B.A.G.E.

The 3M laminate is like no other I have ever experienced. It seems so much softer and goes down with absolutley no silvering. Can cut immediately in a plotter if need be with no wait time. I have not tried oracals laminate though ans maybe I should give it a try.
How much less is it?

I pay $461.25 for the 290G and $487.80 for the 290F optically clear (same 290 but on polyester liner which I use on all my wrap jobs so it saves me from stocking a roll of each). I have nothing to say against 3M 8518 or 8519 but why would I pay $574.12 for the 8518 and the outrageous $665.88 for the 8519??? That's the price I have from my local 3M supplier. Seriously...

Thanks for the comments guys, seems all cast over laminate is expensive. There no real point in spending $100/roll less for something that might not work as well. I was just hoping there was a more cost effective solution that gave the same results. I find it pretty expensive to run the 180 and 8519 together at over 1k a roll for both.

i don't bother using 290 as a lam for 180, but who knows... it might work. Although I can get 8519 overlam cheaper than 290, so I guess it would defeat the purpose.
I HAVE laminated 3551RA with 8519, however.

Truth is I haven't tried anything but the 180 for full wraps. I'm just so happy with it, I can't imagine anything else being much better.

Maybe Canada is a bit more? I pay $570 for 180, and $410 for 8518,19

We also use tons of Oracal 290GF on pretty much any brand. The gloss level is excellent and have never once had a problem with mixing brands. We have had wraps come back for removal 4 years later that still looked great - printed on 3M 180 and laminated with Oracal.
