Looking for Guidance on Sign Permitting in New York

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to get into sign permitting in New York and need help understanding the process. Specifically, I’d like to learn:

  1. How to determine if a sign requires a permit.
  2. How to file the permits myself without using sign expediting companies.
I’m ready to pay for a consultation with someone who has experience in this area. If you can help or know someone who can, please let me know.

In New York City, a sign requires a permit if it's larger than six square feet in total area or if it's not painted directly onto a building. Signs must also comply with the NYC Construction Codes, the NYC Zoning Resolution, and the Rules of the City of New York.

Here are some other signs that don't require a permit:

  • Signs that are painted directly onto a building
  • Signs that are smaller than six square feet in total area and not illuminated
  • Signs erected by city agency employees
  • Temporary signs erected during construction work
  • Temporary signs offering the sale or rental of real property

Signs must be installed by or under the supervision of a licensed sign hanger. A licensed sign hanger can submit construction documents and plans for approval by the Department of Buildings. "

message Moze . This is right up his alley.

Appreciate the confidence, but I'm not a permit guy lol and have no desire to be. I've done my share but I'm no expert and don't enjoy dealing with that end of things.

Side note: It's super common for people to assume that when anyone mentions anything about New York that they're automatically referring to NYC. ie: I mention I moved to NY, and people ask what part of the city I moved to. It's a big state, people! :big laugh:

nolanola I'm assuming you mean NYC in general. If so, buckle up. I know just enough to stay away.

New York is a big state. Some places you can permit easily, some you have to get a local installer to do it whose license by the state. All depends on where the permits being pulled. Start by looking up codes or contacting the municipality or county where the signs will be installed. Talk to a building inspector and find out what you need and if you're able to pull the permit or have to subcontract that out. I've pulled thousands of permits throughout the country including New York, 99% of the time you need a permit and it all starts by calling the building inspector.
