LUMAMEDIA... What is it and how does it work?

Hey everyone,

I just got word of this lumamedia and I've tried to check it out online but I can't really find any good info on it. Their website is quite vague and not very descriptive.

I'm wondering how the product actually works and what exactly it is. Combo of lights/special vinyls?

Hope someone knows more about this!

There have been a few companies offering this sort of thing for several years now. Google electroluminescent vinyl or tape. It is basically sheets of EL (electroluminescent) film with a print on top. If the film is made to accept ink you can print directly onto it. EL film can light in a few different colors as well. Its output does degrade over time but still could be a neat idea but a hard sell due to the cost. I've looked into as well a couple of years ago. You will have to get power to it. Since it is thin and flat that is not super difficult to pull off though. EL film requires a transformer which connects to the vehicles 12v power. The legality of having it turned on while the vehicle is on the road driving is questionable. You are also limited to an extent on the size and shape. EL film has a positive and negative half which needs to be somewhat evenly distributed on the sheet.

i'm still not incredibly impressed by it. GlowSticks, are my best comparison. Only as bright as you see in photos, when in pitch-black darkness. And with a half-life of 3000 hours it doesn't appeal to me for use on anything but (expensive)temporary novelty signs. One year of average night time use and you're looking at 25% of the original brightness... which wasn't really that much to begin with.

better-off installing fluorescent wrap graphics, and having indirect blacklight illumination installed where they intend to park it overnight.
