Marking Up Dimensional Lettering?..

Gemini's catalog has about a 65% markup included in the list price. I'm wondering if other sign shops are ADDING design and install time cost to this marked up price or considering those costs part of the markup?

I would NEVER sell installed or anything at that price. I treat that like it is my price and then add for profit, install, truck, permit... To install that type of lettering well is also not always a walk in the park. And of course you would add for design time.

we sell the actual letters at the retail cost in the book, design, install and any other charges are above and beyond that cost.

I would maybe sell to them at that price if they walked in and said "I need these 10 letters in this color, this material..." Then just handed them the box when they came in. I.e. I don't know where it is going, into what, I never laid it out, no site survey, no sales call, no installation, no tools or employees involved, no insurance, no warranty....

I show the customer the book and the price in it, then add extra for install.

Gemini Rep once told me 3x cost is generally accepted.

If I'm drilling holes vs. tape mounting I charge more for install. OR if they are getting bronze (metal, etc) letters I may charge a little less since the cost of the letters is pretty high.

It depends on the job and what percentage of the job the actual letters represent.
But no matter what sales time, design and of course install are additional.

We don't pay too much attention to what the supplier is charging us for the letters.We mostly look at how much advertising value the product is going to give and how much time is involved to make it happen.We come up with a number for that then we add the marked up cost of letters on top of that.

I go by the job, the drilling, attitude of customer, I dont use the suggested price in the book.

We always mark the book price 100% . Then the design, install and everything else. Those are always good paying jobs. Even if the customer only wants the letters, you still have to consider your time emailing, proofing, emailing again. Why should I do that for free. Everything we use has already been marked up by the supplier, why should Gemini letters be different.
