Media for Mutoh

Could the media that I use for my Mutoh play a big part in why the ink looks so heavy and why the graphics I print appear so dark?

While I've been testing things out, I've been using regular Intermediate Calendered vinyl, SC-50 from 3M. I'm going to order something else today. But I didn't know if that's why my prints are so dark. Almost like because of the finish, the ink is a big thick and runny?

i print on oracal 651 all the time and it prints good. i have the mutoh falcon JR and the Falcon 48" too. it has to do with your color profiles. which profiles are you using and what RIP software?

It came with Flexi Print SE 5. I have the FlexiPrint 10 DX on order.

In Flexi Print 5, they have "presets", is that what you mean by profiles? I've tried using various ones with no difference :(

Yes,

It is probably because SC-50 does not appear to be an inkjet media.
You will probably want an IJ media from 3M.
Or custom profiles and some testing to print on non-inkjet media.

Aha! I finally found a good profile on the Mutoh site, and if I make it unidirectional, it's practically giving me what I need.

My question is, why is it that when I raise it to 1440, does the image look so dark and bleedy?

If you just change the resolution, you corrupt the profile.

If you want to print at 1440 (on photopaper or backlit) then you need a 1440 profile for your media.

So would you say that for doing non-photos I'll be using 720 for most things? Seems like the decals turn out nice in 720 :)
