Mimaki JV3-130 SPII streaking/smearing on raster images

This is a problem we've been having for as long as I can remember, and we've always found a work around to fix it eventually, but I figured I'd check and see if anyone knew the cause.

Sometimes, randomly, when a raster image is sent to our JV3, the print will come out fine except for streaks of color (often black, but this morning they came out a lighter color against a black background) that jut out from the edges of the image.

It's not a problem with the print heads touching the media.

From CorelDRAW, we've found that exporting the images as a JPG and reimporting them tends to fix the problem - but we have no idea why that fixes it unless it's just resampling the image. Working from Illustrator is more frustrating because I haven't found a way that works every time.

Does anyone have an idea as to why this happens at all? It only happens with raster images - anything vector prints perfectly every time. It is also usually an image with a transparent background or an image with a clipping mask.
