Mutoh Valuejet pumped all ink out.

First off.. I'm very new to using a large format printer.

I pushed the Power Off button, I didn't mean too, I was just loading new material. So, I pushed the power button again to get it to turn on and nothing happened, screen still said "power off". I held the button down with no change. So, I assumed it was "stuck", so I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it powered up.
Then, it said it needed to "fill" something or other and began "pumping" in a matter of minutes three of the ink cartridges went from between 30-50% to empty.

What caused this? Is it normal? When we buy new cartridges and put them in will it continue to just pump and pump till something happens, or really, what is it trying to do? Or, what do I do to stop this from happening again.

What machine do you have? I don't know what caused this. You are caught in an ink charge or head wash cycle. Do you have a serviceman that can reset the flags on the machine.

The model number says VJ 1604a. So, I guess that's what it is.

We don't have anyone who can do anything to the printer, this is an odd situation, where the owner (who has never been in the sign business) just bought the company early last month, hired me on the same day (and I have little to no knowledge of printer upkeep). And there seems to be no manuals anywhere that I can find of.
Many years ago for a short time I had a little experience with a small Mimaki, but that was over 5 years ago, and I've forgotten just about everything to do with that.
