Off goes the paper!

I've been chasing a couple issues with my Falcon Jr. this past week mainly centering around clogged heads. Those issues seemed to be taken care of with a successful test print and calibration, then a new issue arose.
I turned the machine off, then back on to initialize a test print from my program, the machine didn’t recognize the end of the paper, and kept rolling it out the back. The rollers kept moving even though both sensors were clear of paper. This had happened once before when I first purchased the machine, and it mysteriously rectified itself. I loaded the paper numerous times this morning, and each time the machine spooled it back out. I went into the ‘Exam: sensor’ mode to see what it said, and all the readout said was ‘sensor xf: on’, which really doesn’t help much.
Short of letting the printer sit quietly in a corner and think on what it's done, any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks,
Rick

Edited for dumbness: in repairing the print head and capping station, I was cheating the top cover, which apparently provides the needed cover for the front sensor. Dim the lights in the room, and the unit works fine.
