painting vs. printing

nashvillesigns

Making America great, one sign at a time.
Hello everyone!

Since the advancement of exterior paint technology, what are your thoughts and experiences with painting flat signage vs. printing and laminating?

Some of the Post and Panel options we just digitally print and wrap the panels. custom shapes are getting more creative, which doesn't work with wrapping.
it seems to make sense to paint.

GO!!!!

It depends on the project. If it's a temp sign that's only gonna be up a year or two, print/lam and slap it on. If it's something that will be up for years, well, then I go for materials that are going to have that longevity. That doesn't always equate to painting, but it definitely isn't prints.

Yep, depends on the design.
Even if it's a high end long term sign it may require digital prints, they just need to know they will have to be replaced

Since I only paint and have done very complicated graphic ads and also basic ads. That eliminates that some designs are to complicated to be painted . However I believe it comes down to the price, even if something can be painted it generally is never cheaper even if the client would have to change the sign every couple years with vinyl to mantain vibrancy. One of my opinions is hand painted ads and signs are only worth their weight if the customer will be able to readily acknowledge that the ad is hand painted, then also will that lend legitimacy to the product being sold.

painting is a must in high end signage. high gloss laminated prints have no place on high signage. It destroys the look. or dimensional PVC is always primed and painted with stain latex sometimes mixed with semi gloss for a better look. we still do quite a bit of painting using automotive enamels and latex
