Photoshop/Illustrator Question

I am still leaning how to use Photoshop & Illustrator for designing stuff for my printer. So I am running into a problem with somthing I am trying to do.

I have a food item that I am trying to place onto a faded oval that I designed in Illus. I know how to select stuff i Photoshop but when I place it into Illus. it still has the white box around it. So is there to transfer or select only the object in Illus. or do I have to put it in Photoshop to place it?

Use the background eraser tool to get rid of the white background, then save as a transparent .psd. Place in illustrator, and all you should see is the item without it's background. psd files print better, I've also found out.

or export the faded illustrator oval as a .tif & make a new layer in photoshop.

You will still need to eliminate the white area around the food, like idea sign suggested though. To do that, in the layers pallette, double click the background layer, then you can change it to layer #0 (or any name besides "background") ...then you will be able to select and delete the white. I find the magiuc wand the easiest way, unless your food pic has white on the edges that ends up getting selected.
