Pictures moved in Illustrator

When I reopen files that I have placed images in, they images are moved - way out of postion - usually up to a corner of the entire area (not just the artboard). Sometimes they are way over to the right or left and I have to select the picture in the links manager and go to link to find it.

Anyone know why? Working in Illustrator CS2

Do you have Illy installed on another PC to see if it is the file or Illy that is messed?

Never seen this myself either. Very weird.

XP computer with all updates. Don't have another computer to try it on here, but will test it in CS3 on my laptop later.

The images are linked when I place them, but when I save the file I save with images for printing which embeds them. It will print fine through Versaworks. If I open that file back up in Illustrator though the images jump. Here's a screen shot of what it's doing and then a picture of how the file looked when I closed it. Files have not been moved or renamed.

This just started happening regularly about a week ago - it was just a once in a while thing. Didn't update anything.

What were the place images saved as? File type

these particular ones were jpgs but it happens with any picture type I've placed. It does NOT seem to happen when I place an Illustrator eps. And it's not just the proof pages. It does it when I do a comp on a background picture too.

Got me???? Is the illy file set up in layers? If so did you try locking the layer with the placed image?

I think I know what it may be, add an artboard to it so it stays within your guide lines.

That's a new one on me too, although I don't think the artboard would be to blame. I hide mine all the time, without issue.

Might be some kind of a default measurements screw-up. See if there's some kind of setting in XP for default measurements (inches/cm/picas/etc. and make sure illustrator is using the same. Maybe try trashing the preferences file for illustrator and restart the application.

Strange. Never seen it before either. I have seen something similar where applications find the wrong files to link to when using an FPO system, but that would be the first thing you checked I'm sure.

Yeah - they are linking right to begin with...

Now the weird part. I replaced the photos in the file I have the most problems with the (as I have done on each of the 9 revisions) and they stayed put this time.

Weird behaviour.
