Polished Stainless Refurbishment

Hi All

We have been handed a set of polished stainless steel letters from a client who had used them on a former shop. They moved the business, and now want to use them on the new store, but a few of the letters have a few light scratches. They have asked if we can clean them up.

Looking for any pointers on getting these scotches/marks out.

Many Thanks

I work for a custom boat co (Hacker Craft). We make a lot of our own stainless parts and polish them to a mirror finish.

1- If the scratches are deep they will have to be sanded out. we start with something like 180 grit going across the scratches.
then move on to 320 cross hatching the stainless. then to 400, to 600. Polishing on a buffing mach after that first using a hemp wheel and then the final polish with a cotton wheel.

2- If the scratches are minor you can try sanding with some fine sandpaper (1000 or 1500 grit) then polishing with a buffing wheel

3- CAUTION... If you do polish the letters you will probably have to polish ALL of them because the ones that are polished are going to be much shinier than the rest. Once you have started you are committed into a polishing job that could get extensive to get all of the lettering to look the same.

Polishing stainless is not easy or fun.IMO, If you can't see the scratches from a distance I don't think I would open that can of worms:noway:

If you have any concerns about being able to do this I would get a price from a metal polishing shop. There is usually one that does this type of work for a lot of different businesses
