Printer Indicates No Ink ?

Turned on the printer this morning to get this readout 1_2_3_4_ and beeping indicating there was no ink. Anyone know what would cause this? After totally freaking out I finally just pulled out one cart and reinserted it which resolved the problem, all carts reading properly on printer as well as in Versaworks now but I'm stumped as to what might have caused this, printer has operated trouble free for seven years now.

on our printer sometimes its the little chip in the ink cartridge itself that reads improperly, we usually switch out the chips if it reads empty

I have a similar problem with my sp300. I remove the chip from the old cartridge and insert it in the new one. This soles my problem but I don't know if its the cartridge (chip) or the printer.

i stay positive and say its the cartridges, although realistically it's happened to about 90% of them in the past few months

Kinda sorta typical. I work closely with another shop that also has a SP-540V and when ours acts up, he usually knows the solution because his is only a few years older and has done the same thing. Recently ours quit reading registration marks and wouldn't find pinch rollers. He replaced the ribbon twice on his so far and helped us change out ours with a new one... very easy. I mentioned to him ours occasionally reads all four empty and a quick pull and light slam in of the black fixes it, he sais so does his. I don't know if a fix is available. The problem comes and goes. It is worse when you come in on Monday and it's flashing because it happened during one of the every 12 hour surges it does and you don't know how long it's been beeping, like for days. There are other quirks it gets as it gets older, but seem so far to be inexpensive and easy to fix. Hope this helps, J
