Hey guys . . . .
just getting back into the game here. I'd like to start off with a decent sized printer/plotter. Any suggestions on good, better, best?

We have been happy with our Roland. I haven't really heard any bad things about any of the name brands. A better question is what brands does your local dealer support?

FireSprint.com

Trade Only Screen & Digital Sign Printing
-Be sure to start with at least a 54". Most media is available is this width
-Roland, Epson, Mimaki, Mutoh are some of the most popular Ecosolvent ink brands (There are many more)
-HP is latex Both latex and ecosolvent have their advantages.
-Decide on a test file (we have one you can download at firesprint.com/tools) and have it printed in several modes on any printer you are considering. Then compare the apples to apples test.
-Although it might seem like a good idea, most production shops suggest not getting a printer/cutter all in one
-For plotters, Suma and Graphtech are generally considered the market leaders
-Find out about service and techs in your area. Who will you call for help. If you really start making money with your equipment, you're going to want it to be running, not waiting for a repair.

Summa all the way for me, had Roland and Graphtec, I take the Summa any day, Printer I would use a Epson. Epson has a package where you can get a printer and cutter together for a discounted price.
