Refacing Giant Billboard With Banner Strips Like Wallpaper?

player

New Member
11 years ago I did a huge billboard out of 4' x 8' MDO. When I made it, I cut paint mask and rolled 1Shot on it. I painted the boards white twice, and doubled coated everything else, then pealed off the mask. But is time to replace as the paint is failing. I am thinking the easiest way to do this is printing banners and hang them from top to bottom like wallpaper. I would probably Clear Shield them for UV protection. For installation I would use some screws with washers but I am hoping to source stainless steel staples to hold it down. I am not sure of the size but I think it is 16'-20' high and about 40' long. It is viewed from 1/4 mile away at the closest.

The other alternative is to use 1/8" aluminum composite 4' x 8' sheets. I could either print/lam the sections, or mask and paint like I did the first time.

Any suggestions?

Mmmmm....signs
They are a lot of ways to go about it. Depends on customer's budget and expected life. For shorter term use (one year or so), you could fasten an oversize banner print. Use screws with large washers to attach. It will be hard to get it to lay perfectly flat. Better solution is dibond with laminated print graphics.

I think a banner would last much longer than 1 year. I would not use an over sized banner but rather print on 54" banner and hang it vertically. I have experience stretching flexface signs and I don't see a problem stretching it tight.

Inversely I can see the Dibond method as well.

Thank you for the suggestions but I am not outsourcing. I am either doing the banner segments in-house (much like the way billboards are done with paper and glue); or the 4' x 8' sheets either painted; printed vinyl or vinyl.

Out of curiousity, why? Your margins would be much higher if you had a MM make you a huge banner. Your install time would be FAR shorter with less hardware.

What is your reasoning for doing it in the worst way possible?

I know things about sign making. After 30 years, I have my reasons. I won't get into them here, but thank you for your interest.

I don't believe you.

If you knew things about sign making, you wouldn't be here asking how to do what you want to do, you would have just done it. You're here asking because you think it's a stupid idea, but were hoping that folks here would tell you it wasn't.

Well, I have news for you. Putting up 15-20 strips of banner on a billboard is a stupid idea. It makes no sense. The cost is higher than the alternative, the install will be more difficult and time consuming, and the end product will be absolutely inferior.

Unless there's some big reveal about it that you're hiding, you're making a mistake.

OK. Thanks for that.

I'm not one to try to stir stuff up, so don't take this that way....but I'm genuinely confused.

You asked for suggestions but seem to already have your mind made up to do it with multiple banners. You've been doing signs for 30 years, but ask for suggestions for a pretty straightforward install. From everything posted, you're either going with multiple banners or ACM. So I'm confused what you want suggestions on. 30 years in the business is about ten times the amount of experience you need to make this decision. Maybe I'm missing something...

Anyway, if it were me, with the options you gave, I would go with ACM. Easy to manage, etc.

Pretty sure he was pointing out that you should take your own advice.

I know I came off like a jerk earlier. Sorry for that. I was in the middle of ripping off a wrap on a trailer that was done Friday. It wasn't installed correctly and I was at work on a Sunday reprinting it and installing it myself. So... Bad mood.

Seriously though, why are you so set on the banner strip thing when a one piece banner would be cheaper, faster, and better? It's not often you get all 3, you usually have to pick 2, LOL. I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from, and why you want to do it that way?
