Roland SC545 EX won't stay connected via ethernet

We've got an old SC545EX as a backup to our latex printers. Lately it won't stay connected. You can turn it on, start printing a job, it will print a few inches and lose communication with the computer. We've replaced the NIC cards in two computers and replaced the crossover cables to both, we've tried running both through a router and directly to the printer and we're getting the same results.

We're guessing the ethernet card in the printer is the problem. I popped the case on it just to see if it was a standard $10 card and of course it couldn't be that easy. It's an odd sized, oddly configured card. I tried researching the numbers printed on it but that got me nowhere. The only one I can find online from a Roland parts supplier is $980 which is way too much to spend on a hunch.

Anybody got any suggestions before we call in a tech?

Try changing the IP address for the printer, and be sure to change the setting to see that new IP address in Versa or whatever RIP you use. I've had the same problem before, some sort of IP conflict.

On the SC-5454EX series you will need the "InterconNet Tool" to change the IP address of the printer itself. You do not change the IP in Versaworks for the printer. You change it on the machine first using the software mentioned THEN change in Versaworks

I would also recommend making the last series of numbers in the IP as high as possible (ie:253 or 254) to avoid it interfering with anything else on your network
