Photoshop running real slow...I assigned c drive and external f drive as scratch. I tried to assign an empty external but it didnt give me the option? any other ideas?

Yes , use Corel Photopaint I have a lot of photoshop versions and I believe PS 7 wasn't a memory hog,so I just use Photopaint . It will open PSD's

IS your external a USB.. If it is your choking the scratch memory.. Use only a internal/Sata Drive preferably on that's not your main C drive.. And you really only need to use one.. Your chewing up Processing power by using 2 different Scratch drives.

USB for scratch is NO GOOD. It will kill your performance (already mentioned above). Internal or eSATA (if equipped) is a much better plan.

Just backing what everyone else said, only external drive that's any good for a Scratch Disk is an eSATA drive, even Firewire will be a bottleneck. If you have the C drive set as the primary scratch disk you might also want to change that, assuming Photoshop is installed on the C drive. How much RAM do you have?
