Some color channels drop out between printing - Mimaki JFX2513

I am posting for the benefit of the community because I have been fighting this problem for a while and seem to have figured it out. I apologize if this is a duplicate of other posts but I could not find them when I was working on the issue.

Symptom: Almost immediately after becoming ideal, the printer starts to loose at least one color channel (cyan usually) and parts of other colors. As long as I ran a soft (sometimes normal) clean immediately before the next print, the color channels would be restored. I also fought color consistency which tells me that nozzles were dropping out but each print seemed consistent. Interestingly I had much less problems with white, probably because it is a more viscous ink.

The solutions ended up being pretty simple. While watching the head clean I noticed that air bubbles were being blown out of the head which confirmed that the ink is being pulled back into the sub tank. I adjusted the negative pressure to be slightly less than the recommended (from the recommended -2.70kPa to -2.45kpa). This solved the problem for me. Its a fine balance of course because reducing the negative pressure too much will result in ink leaking out which will also degrade printing quality in other ways. For me though it was a great relief to go from constantly fighting ink drop out to almost never needing to do an ink cleaning to recover nozzles.
