SP-300 Encoder strip slapping noise.

Jim Hill

My encoder strip appears to have to much slack in it and is making a slapping noise on each pass.

Is there an adjustment or is it time for a replacement?

Is this something I can replace without calling a tech.

Thanks Jim

I don't think it's your encoder strip. It's the data cable that runs from the head to the back of the printer and attaches to a circut board.

Watch the head while it's moving across the printer. Does it look to be buckling when the head is about in the middle of the pass? If so, a quick and cheap fix is to buy just the clear stirps that are on both sides of the cable and replace them.

Another thing you might try is to clean all the over spray that's on the cable, guide, and top of the cabinet. If these areas are dirty, it will cause the cable to drag instead of roll freely. Eventually the cable will kink and a wire will be damaged.

Probably not the encoder strip... maybe the Cut Carriage Cable and 2 mylar guides.

The common issue with this part is the mylar guides getting too flexible, or too much ink and metal dust accumulating on the guides and causing it to fold over on itself or wearing.

Recommend dealer replacement but many out of warranty end-users have performed this on their own.

Might first try cleaning the mylar guides with some alcohol and/or Windex...

Better to replace prior to it folding over on itself... can cause some electrical damage.

My Mistake sorry

In my last post I was thinking about the encoder strip instead of the ribbon that pulls the cart from one side to the other.

That is what is making the slapping noise. Is there an adjustment or do I need to replace it?

My machine only gets used about 2 hours a week right now and the ribbon is about 1 or 2 years old.

Thanks Jim

There is a ribbon cable that is above and behind the gray encoder strip that is probably causing the slapping sound

If the encoder strip was causing this noise, it would print very funky! there should be a spring attached to the encoder and the chassis on the left end of the encoder.

The wire cable that pulls the heads from side to side should not have slack in it, just tension. Also, if this was loose, you would more than likely get motor errors and poor output if any.

No. Open the front cover, wet a lint free cloth with windex and wipe both sides of each mylar strip as well as the metal shelf that is slides back and forth...

NOTE: Be careful as most all metal parts on the Roland printers have sharp edges and can cut you pretty quick.
