The answer to your questions are...you're screwed. You cannot buy just the sponge and, as far as I know, there is no part from any other machine that will work. As I said, you're screwed. You have to buy the plastic holder to get the sponge. ~$60.00 US.

I've got two of them that I swap whenever the sponge in the machine gets completely clogged and nasty looking. Then I soak the sponge from the one I just removed in cleaner solution for 3 or 4 sequential baths and tlet it dry for a good while. They never come completely clean but clean enough to be used for a while.

The cleaning fluid I suck out of a cleaning cartridge with a 35cc syringe with a blunted 2" #14, or so, needle. Available at any farm supply store. You blunt the needle with a grinder or a file.

Wouldn't it be the same as the 1604?

I have found the sponges to be very expensive for what they are.
You can make the printer spit onto the material.

I use the 1604 sponge in my 1204. It takes a little work to make it fit. It goes into the flush box just fine when it is new and dry. But, when it gets saturated with ink, it swells up too much for the box and bulges upward. So, after a couple of days, when it starts to swell up, I take it out with a pair of tweezers and cut a little off 2 sides, put it back in and it's good for 6 or 8 months. Signwarehouse sells these (DG-40317) in a 5 pack for $38. You certainly don't have to replace the entire flush box. Search the forum. There is a thread here when a member tells exactly how he makes his own sponges for much, much less.
