I'm looking into a used Mutoh 1304 and wondering whether I really need the take up reel and why it would be good to have.
Thanks..

Invaluable on long runs that can be left unattended, and on prints with heavy saturation. You have to ask yourself, do I need one?

Depends on what you do. If most of your prints are 8' or longer get one, if not you can easliy get by without one.

If you get a sturdy one like the OEM unit you can use it to load & print full 50yd rolls of 54" banner that are too heavy for the plastic media holders in the rear.

I use mine on my Roland a lot, it's nice if you have a few different jobs on the same material or long prints. I get more done while printing and laminating is way faster.

We had a roland without one when i started working here, when we started looking at 2nd printers i INSISTED on one with. we run with our take up on 90% of our jobs, i hated babysitting the roland and god help us if a customer came in mid print i had to talk to... nothing is more frustrating/ unprofessional then having to excuse yourself for a second to go check on your printer because everyone else is also busy.
I think for the added cost it has paid for itself many times over already.

Personally I always Use it

I always have rather long banner runs and must use a take up reel. I have a good tip regarding the take up reel BTW. I'm not sure if this is done commonly or not but it was never mentioned to me when my Roland Rep demo'd the printer. Add about 6 feet of banner material to the take up reel, line it up and permanently tape it in place. Now when doing a setup you only have to tape the material about to be printed to the leader material on the take up reel and you're done. No more stopping the machine to tape it directly to the take up reel after a few minutes of printing. Hope this make sense. I can send a pic if anyone is interested. It really speeds things up. Heck, maybe you are already all doing this.

I purchased a third party cheap add-on take-up from ebay for $325 with FREE shipping, and although it will not hold an entire roll of material, it does a great job allowing me to print unattended and keeping long prints (banners) off the floor.

So, I say YES, you need one! The video is the same model I have.
