Thought I'd share the tech part of my weekend. I'm pretty happy with both of these, especially considering their benefits to my line of work. Thought maybe some of you may be interested...they were both 'new to me' tech stuff.
1.) Sony SmartWatch: Kind of hard to have a techie watch not look kind of techie (insert "nerdy"), but I thought this wasn't too bad. You can pair it with certain phones (I'm using the Note II) via Bluetooth and then download apps/widgets that allow the watch to control functions on the phone.
Examples:
...a music app to control your music player (pause, stop, volume up, volume down, previous track, next track, etc.)
...a message app (shows incoming text messages, sender, option to reply with customer message, call the sender, etc.)
...a watch that you can customize colors, design, etc.
...a phone app to view incoming calls, answer (handy if you have a Bluetooth headset - I don't), send custom message, etc.
...a Google maps app to view your route directly on the watch
...a calculator app
...and a bunch of others
My primary reasons for getting it is I hate digging for my phone (keep it in a velcro'd pocket on my leg) every time I need a calculator, control my music, check to see if an incoming call or text is one I need to take, etc. I spend a lot of time in aerial lifts, on ladders, etc., and I think it will be pretty cool to just be able to glance at the watch and see who is calling or texting, etc. It's kind of a novelty, yes, but I really think I'll get a bunch of use out of it.
2.) Splashtop: An app for Android (and I'm sure others) that allows remote desktop access directly from your phone. The free version only works while on the same network (ie: home wi-fi). For about $17 per year, you can have access from anywhere. So from any job site or customer meeting, etc., you can access all files on your home computer. Pretty cool I thought. Maybe stuff like this is old news, but implementation and use was so easy, I was pretty excited to find it.
The last picture is a screenshot from the phone showing the access to to my home computer.
