thin rubber on doors that don't open question

I have been getting more and more vehicles like sprinters and transits that have the side door that isn't a door but has a rubber seal or gasket where the 2 pieces of metal meet. graphics have no choice but to go over them and I am curious what the best method to make sure that the vinyl adheres and stays on.

I have never had anything returned for this, but last week I was putting down a line of copy that had very fine letters and wouldn't you know that a "T" hit the rubber dead on and was held onto the metal on each side by less than an 1.8". I could see that this was never going to work and even heat did nothing. I actually removed the line of copy and kerned it so that the "T" just missed the rubber.
