Trend Micro????

I've gotten 4 emails today from (supposedly) Trend Micro, that has this in the body of the message

Trend Micro Internet Security has detected an email that may contain malicious contents and attached it to this new mail as a text file. If you need to read the original mail message, we recommend you open it as a text file. To prevent infection, do not save the original mail as a mail file.

Do not reply to this mail.

There is indeed a "TXT" attachment with this warning email.....although I have been hesitant to open it, for fear that THAT is a virus itself.

Whats your thoughts? You would think, if this was a legitimate email from Trend, that it would at least contain the "sender" information...but no.

Curiosity killed the cat..... or in this case, the computer. Meowwwww.

So, is this legit???? Would you open the text attachment?

ps. These started coming right after I opened an email from one of our members here (in case he reads this). His message was about Navy Seals, and had a redundancy of the same pics attached.

it seems that this might be a legit email. if your email provider/server has a built in trend antivirus service, i would assume that somebody with an infected pc/account sent you an email.

once your are sure that it is indeed a txt file... and not just something with a ".txt" somewhere in it's filename, then i am very very confident that you will not get infected in any way by opening it. i probably would - just in case the email contained something important.

don't know if this matters Kelly (or anyone), but I am using "Outlook Express".

nope. it doesn't really matter what your email client is. your email client only gets involved when your pc is the one infected and is mass mailing everybody on your outlook contact list.

btw, i just remembered what i usually do in these situations. i open up notepad first, and open the questionable file from there. [in contrast to just double clicking the file] this eliminates the possibility of being infected... even if it was actually a virus.

I have used Trend Micro since 2000 and I have seen these messages many times. They are legit. Usually it has been my experience emails flagged like that aren't worth reading though. Everyone I got was from some prince in Nigeria who lost his throne or something similar and wanted to give me 46 million dollars.

Thats the odd part. I do get my share of "spam"....and spam with email attachments. My email does a pretty good job at filtering them out. What strikes me as odd, half of my spam folder looks like it should be flagged with this warning. :Big Laugh

Also odd, that I've been running Trend for the last few years, and this is the first (maybe second) time I've seen this. And then all of a sudden, 4 in one day.

If you do decide to be curious and want to look at the attachement be sure it is indeed a real txt file. I've seen these in the past where they look like real intercept/notifications like this but when you look close the file has a double extension like blah.txt.exe. Probably not one like that but always want to be sure. Trend Micro is very legit and used by more enterprises than home users.
