Tuscan Style Welcome Sign?

Got a call from one of my clients wife telling me that her and her husband were opening a little "Italian Bistro Cafe" and wanted a Welcome sign on the wall as you walk in. Space is approx 4'h x 6.5'w. She wants it to stretch the 6.5' but doesnt want it to look like the "fake" Tuscan look.

I asked her what the fake Tuscan look was and she said you know, with all the fake looking vines and grapes everywhere.

I have done something like this for another Italian restaurant but they wanted the vines and grapes.

Thought about just "BENVENUTI" I believe that is Welcome in Italian.

When I think Tuscan style, the vines and grapes is the first thing that pops in my head. When I google it, vines and grapes are pretty much all you see.

Any ideas on what a Tuscan style would be other than vines and grapes?

Now, she wants tuskan style without tuskan elements or she wants a sign that is italian inspired without tuskan elements?

If she wants an italian styled sign with no tuskan elements ... first thing that comes to my mind is florishes and swirly script lettering and a big fat chef on the front ...

something like that (only not disney based) ... modern italian restaurant signs are a lot more silhouette based with bold contrasting colors like black white and red in thick lettering. more old school could be abstract shapes that travel partially under the name and and old old school (fine italian eating i would put it) would be like the example i listed.

A background that looks like vintage plaster with simple architectural elements/patina wrought iron and maybe some old wood planks hand lettered mounted to the background. Outwater plastics has a lot of arcitectural pieces that would work and I think it's King metal that has a lot of decorative cast metal pieces.

This is going to be 100% about font choice. Also, what type of sign are you making? Digital print, carved, sandblasted? Just the way the sign is made will help to contribute to the feel she is looking for.

Personally, I wouldn't do this unless it was a 3 dimensional piece, preferably hand carved and not "perfect" in it's finish...

You have my deepest sympathies with this project!

Personally ... I would run and hide before dealing with this woman!

that's not really fair as she just wants something that doesn't look like every other place out there with no imagination that slaps up some grapes and some vines. this project actually sounds like fun as she is open to something nice.

Find out what her budget is. For a 2'x6.5' carved/blasted combo sign, if she's not willing to spend upwards of $1200, I'd not do the job...

Because she isn't going to be happy with what she can afford...
