using Various pieces of rejected artwork

So if you have a bunch of files that you have made for customers that they have rejected. Is it okay to recycle them? Especially if they have effects or a background style that someone else would like?

Definitely use them, a majority of my rejected stuff or even the stuff the client never sees is used... even the stuff I do here as examples, I recycle.

Wondering if any of you, on invoices or contracts, note that clients only own the final chosen design and not any of the preliminary designs or options?

I didn't, until a clients wanted files for all the preliminary logo designs, so they could print them as a collage on their napkins and the back of their menus. They thought it would be interesting for customers to see the evolution of their logo. I told them "that would be interesting and very expensive."

My contract is a mix of the AIGA, SEGD and various contracts I have seen thrugh the years

This is a portion of my ownership section for my graphic and environmental graphics...

All artistic expression, design concepts, sketches, notes, photographs,
drawings, specifications, computer files and the right to create copies or
derivative works there from shall remain the property of the designer
whether the project for which they are made is executed or not.

and this for logo design:

Upon payment of all fees and expenses, the designer transfers ownership of
the final logo, logotype and/or typography developed to the client.
