Is there a way to check the ink status while the printer is in use?

No.
You will need to do that in between prints.

You can't check it while printing but you should receive wanrnings when it getting close to out.

Randy will the new models improve in this area?
My old waterbased Encad 1000i had a real nice app with real time monitoring of ink levels in use. Reported to a spreadsheet how much of each channel was used on each job.

Pull them out & weigh them. The job will keep printing from the subtanks

There are already a technician version of a windows program that techs can use to look at ink and other things.
They are looking at bringing this, or something like it to the end user.
Not sure when though.
I will try and remember to ask when I am in Japan next week.
