Versaworks Dual is Double Cutting Cutlines

Hey Guys!
We're dabbling with the new Versaworks Dual lately, mostly loading files with transparencies or if regular Versaworks will not recognize the cutline for whatever reason.

We're finding that files that have any transparencies are DOUBLE CUTTING along the cut line. For some reason, Versaworks Dual IS recognizing the cut line, but it's cutting twice (or it's cutting the inside of the cut line and the outside of the cut line - 1px stroke, eps from illustrator). All of the stickers end up with a paper thin strip of vinyl that can be pulled out from around each sticker...

Is anyone else noticing this?

Hey splizaat,

You're correct in mentioning the association between transparencies and cutting paths. Using Adobe Illustrator, the following should resolve this issue:

Open the file in Illustrator and immediately move the CutContour path to its own layer (and that layer must be the top-most layer).

Now, save the file as an .EPS, clicked the OK button when prompted about transparencies, under the EPS options there’s a transparency section, I clicked on the “custom” button, removed the check mark for “Convert All Strokes to Outline”, clicked OK, then proceeded to save the file and add it to VersaWorks.

The cutting path should be recognized just fine and not double-cut.

However, If the cutting path is still not recognized or double-cuts, it’s likely related to a file construction issue. We have a video that trains on the proper method to adding the CutContour path to the artwork file. Check out the video here:

As a new Roland owner, I had the same problem. Not sure about the layer part, but mine was due to adjusting stroke to interior/exterior. Took me a while, but doing that change in stroke path was the problem. Now when creating a cutline, I leave it at the default center. Hope this helps someone else.

A little late to the party, but I don't know if anyone's still trying to figure this out, but the problem is when you create a stroke as a cut mark. Even if you set it to a quarter of point, it's still a two sided line. Converting it to a path is just a pain and all those extra steps are unnecessary. If your used to outlining your artwork with a stroke, what you need to do is just swap your stroke and fill, make sure your stroke is crossed out and your fill is the CutContour spot color of your choice and your set. But the best way to do it is just create an offset path of your artwork, unite it with your pathfinder, and then just fill it with your CutContour Spot color.

One thing I've noticed in illustrator as well is keeping the stroke line centered. Image attached as example. If the stroke is on the outside or inside it will double cut.

Maybe someone could help me with the same issue with FlexiPRINT? It's hit and miss, which confuses me. I'm also a new user of the software but I have a lot of experience with Roland and VW. Without layers or stroke details, I can't figure it out.

I sell stickers and sticker accessories.
Never used Versa Duel, but on VW5 a double cut in the same place was often the result of 2 identical paths in the artwork, one hiding the other.
Or when the client created their own cut path, it would double cut for some odd reason, creating my own cut path would fix this.

For 2 cuts, one offset a bit, this was always because the the cut path was expanded and no longer just a path, but a compound path. Release the compound path and erase one of the 2 paths, or merge them. Or again, create your own path, don't rely on the path that is in the clients artwork.
