Wall graphic lamination?

It was mentioned during the Oracal wall graphic webinar yesterday that wall graphics should always be cold laminated. But I'm not sure I agree with that. It's going to increase the price noticeable and I think most people would understand that on a printed wall you shouldn't just start spraying Windex around.

I've never laminated my Oracal wall vinyl. Unlaminated it looks painted on the wall, if you laminate it, it's going to extrude out and look like a sign was placed on it, plus the extra cost. Also if it's interior, why laminate? There is no weather or UV light.

I don't usually bother laminating indoor wall graphics unless they're in a busy, close-quarters area such as a hallway where people might be shuffling by each other and might bump/rub up against it. Or if kids might get to it.

I've used 3268, 3628 and even 3169. Yeah, the material is more playable and prone to surface damage than their normal offerings, but adhesion is still highly dependent on the surface. I've had unlaminated 3628 on the doors of outside ice chests that I just took down after a year and I was amazed at their condition.

Long term, laminate for protection and no laminate for short term jobs. Liquid laminate is an option to prevent the curling but most of us don't have a liquid laminator for the large jobs.

I'm sure their motivation is twofold; They sell more product and make more money, and it benefits the end user by adding chemical and abrasion resistance.

I have large wall graphic printed on the O.3268 that I moved from my previous location where it was printed six years ago. And it's in fine shape.
And I think with the latex ink you probably could spray it with windex if you wanted.

This would be a great application for the HP PVC Free Wallpaper material. Its super easy to work with and you don't need to laminate it.

We laminate about 90% of the time on wall jobs.... depending on the job, some gloss and some matte.
