Some great footage from this years Volvo Ocean Race.
It Started in October lasr year and will continue through this July.
A 40,000 mile race around the world by 6 70' boats.
3 of which have already lost their masts and 1 has sustained serious hull damage, though they are still all in the race.

In an interview of one of the crew he stated that if people could be dropped on one of these boats for 30 minuites while they were in the Southern Ocean it would instanly become the most popular sporting event in the world. I really can't understand why it isn't already.

Sorry I don't think I could get into it. I mean props if these guys are giving up over a year of their life to sail little boats around the world, and who knows the insanity they have to go through some days. But... really, how could this ever get that popular???

It couldn't and that's why it hasn't. Boat races like this have been going on forever. Still not popular.

What speeds do they travel at? Obviously it varies...

25+ knots per hour.

This year they had to be picked up by a freighter at an undiclosed location to be moved through pirating areas. The militaries of the world could not escoert them becasue the military does not have any equipement that will keep up with these open 70 racing boats for days on end.

That looks like fun.
As for paddling, I heard on the news a guy just crossed the Atlantic
in a canoe...

Really? Why don't they race trimarans then? 35-50 knots. Yeah baby.
