I have a racing client who would like to compare the weight of wrapping his ride versus painting it. Does anyone know what printed and laminated film weighs per square foot?
We have a customer who campaigns a pro dragster nationally- they wrap their body because it is lighter than paint.
We just patched the vinyl on the body from a engine that turned grenade.
i would think it would be negligible over a base/clear paintjob. some guys are crazy though. we race against guys that wont paint their chassis and just wd-40 it every week to save the weight over paint/powdercoat.
take a piece of their race car that is painted weigh it, then take piece of the same material, size that is bare wrap it in full ink coverage weigh it and there is your answer
the average stock car is gonna take a sprayable gallon of paint and maybe 3/4 gallon of clear. maybe 20-30lbs BEFORE the solvents leave. but they still have sponsors that need to be applied. the total weight for each option has to be close. maybe not with 3165ra and 210 like i use..but with real wrap materials.
If the paint is done right it will be quite heavy. 1) Epoxy sealer on bare metal. 2) Bodywork(bondo) 3) 2K style surfacer. 4) Base shade/sealer for color match/holdout 5) Basecoat 6) Clearcoat.
