What the heck is a contour cut?

I've seen this term about everywhere I look in my software and on every sign website. What the HECK is a "contour cut" and why do I need to know it? I'd sure like to have an educated answer to this because from down g what I've done so far I cannot imagine what this is for, or what it does!

.................And please........no "left-handed-wrench" jokes!!!

It's a cut that contours the object. In other words, if you have an apple that you are printing, you can cut a box around it, or you can cut a contour cut around it that would go around the apple, stem and leaf right at the edge of the graphic. There wouldn't have to be white space around the apple with a contour cut.

Hope that makes sense.
