Where to get Cedar??

OK, This one may be a waste of time, but I have exhausted all of my local resources for lumber, to no avail. I am needing to find a lumber mill/yard, that has, or can get 12" x 12" x 10' or 12' cedar posts, similar to the columns in the attached photo. Am I just brain dead? Obviously, SOMEONE carries them, but I'll be darned if I can find them. Am I just an idiot? Does anyone have a decent source, SOMEWHAT close to Louisiana, to get these from? The company has no clue who built the building (nor, I think, do they care). They just want us (ASAP) to build them a sign, using the same cedar posts so it matches the front of the building.

Ideas?? :thankyou:

We have several lumber yards locally that stock it, however, I don't think they would ship it all the way to you that would be cost effective for you or your customer.

Look up some local lumber yards and see if they can special order you some. If not, try a local 'High End' carpenter or construction company which does a lot of this kinda work. They should have a handle on it.

It's expensive.

Cedar can be hard to find but most non-chain lumber yards should have it. 12x12s may need to be special ordered though.

Another option would be to use a pressure-treated post and wrap it with 2x10s or 2x12s to give the appearance of a solid 12x12 post (this option would by a lot cheaper I would imagine).

Maybe try a local cabinet maker. I go to a local guy here who can get pretty much anything in any size. He charges cost of material plus 5%. They get deliveries every Wednesday and as long as I let him know by 2pm Monday, I will have it here on Wednesday.

Just a thought.

Good ideas, thank you! I called quite a few lumber yards in our area - the problem here is, we are commercially yellow and white pine growers in this area - Deep East Texas (and NW Louisiana) Piney Woods, so not much cedar grows here, at least not that big.

@ insignia - I REALLY like your idea - that may be what we end up doing, if I can't find the posts. The yards I talked to were very unhelpful (the brush off) as to ordering it for me.

Oh come on. Can't substitute Loblolly for cedar? I don't think they would be able to tell the difference. I am being sarcastic here.

I would check with high end places, that might have more of a selection then the local sawmill.

Yea, Thanks, Wildwest! I am now calling high end cabinet makers, as suggested. Like I said in first post, The duh factor hit after much negativity from the lumber yards.

If they absolutely need to be solid Cedar, you can get them from Issaquah Lumber in Issaquah, Washington. They are Cedar specialists and they will have the lengths you need. If not in stock, they will mill to your spec's. The shipping will kill you though.

Ok, y'all POSITIVELY ROCK!!!! Cabinet maker in Shreveport has 7 in stock!!!! Now, WHY didn't I think of cabinets for lumber posts?? :U Rock::cool1::rock-n-roll::thumb:

I would cost compare and probably go the PT core w/wrap. From a few feet away it would look fine.

I'm guessing it's classified as tight-knot. I'm no expert on wood or how it's classified these days. Clear is more expensive. The last 12" x 12" x I bought was tight-knot and looked the same as the pic.
