Calling all PhotoShop experts.

Can't figure this one out.

I'm using CS5. Client has sent me a large bitmap file, 11"x17" at 800 dpi.

After opening it in PS, I find that I can't do anything with it. When I select a tool and mouse over the image, I get a
circle/slash icon.

I can't even create a duplicate layer. Tried saving it as a .tif file with the same result.

I haven't encountered this before.

What am I doing wrong here?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

i usually open them in infraview then save them as jpeg..
then you can work with it.

I don't know about infraview. Is that in the Creative Suites?

You'll have to change the color mode before all tools are available.

Did you get it?
could be as simple as the layer being locked?
maybe the doc itself is "locked from editing?"
Maybe more RAM needs to be allocated?
Hope you are able to get it figured out.

That program's EULA's state that it's program's use is only for "private, non-commercial use".

We are a commercial business.

See if it is in "Indexed Color" mode.

Image > Mode

If it is, change it to RGB (preferably) and you should be able to edit it.

In the image/mode menu, everything is greyed out except the bitmap and grey scale options. Can't go to RGB or CMYK.

This is pretty maddening. Can't change channel or image mode. Most items are greyed out/not available.

try making a copy of the file and change mode to Bitmap

Also, you can use the Rectangular Marquee, draw a box around the complete image and copy/ paste into a new file...but either way works
