Photoshop: Color photo gradient to B&W?

I need to take a color photo and make it gradiate from color to black and white. I did a google search and found a tutorial but it's not working. Someone even commented that he left out a couple of steps. I tried the additional steps and still couldn't get it to work.

Does anyone here know how to do it and wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to tell me? (I hope it'll just take a few minutes. I don't want ya to spend alot of time helping out lil' ol' me!)

new layer, gradient from white to transparent, set layer to saturation

color image on one layer
duplicate it and convert to BW/Grayscale
Add a gradient mask on top of the color one to expose the BW underneath
