What Do Like Best About The Sign Biz?

Ok, the pet peeve one is going well.
But let's end the week on a positive note (not that venting about peeing Calvin doesn't have a positive effect on our well being)

What are some of the things that make this the life to lead?
(cue sound effects of criickets chirping...)

To start:

-After 12 years in industrial sales- I love having more than a spreadsheet of numbers to show for a days work.

-Using my creativity in ways few people can make a living at.

-Customers who say "Whatever it costs, go ahead with it" and actually meaning it.

-Being able to pick up my Martin and play a tune or two while my printers running.

-The obsene amount of assistance, wisdom, and hunour found on Signs 101

Art...

From typography to design to hand made signs and pretty much everything in between.
Just some incredible art.

• The smell of paint and turpentine
• The customer who says "I don't care what you do, just make it look good"
• Going to pinstriping meets and hanging out
• when something turns out as I'd expected
• d!cking around in Corel
• new referrals from pleased or favorite customers
• wall jobs with my friend and mentor, Bill (about once every 18 months now)
• being well known in my community because of making a lot of signs
(and getting kidded sometimes)

The freedom (and stress!) of owning my own business...

The artistic side of life!

Being able to tell PITA customers to get the f#*k out of my shop...

Being good enough at what I do that I can tell PITA customers to....lol

Teaching my kids about the sign business...

Watching my son make a new (for him) kind of sign....

Watching my daughter to everything in her power to avoid real work :)

And last, but certainly not least, knowing that even though I am in no way, shape or form a rich (or even comfortable) man, that I am happy in my profession, my marriage, and my family :)

The fact that even though technology and hacks have killed a major portion of the fun of this industry there is still more than enough left to make me feel like I'm goofing off and getting paid for it most of the time.

My collection of solid Gold money transportation wheel barrows... I hear there's a new tandem model out these days especially designed for Yard sign manufacturers.

there are many things i like about the business (a bunch already mentioned ) but one of the main things is when you are out with your friends or family and you go by something you did or a truck goes by you worked on. it feels good to show them what you do and it's out there for everyone to see

Hmmmmmm ....

44 years of getting paid to have fun and travel around and look down on tiny people ( from about 100 feet up in the air).

Also the happy look on customer's faces when they see the finished work.
