I bought Signlab *(version 8 I think) for about $2000 maybe 5 years ago... after about 1 year, I stopped using it & would offer to sell it for $900 complete with like new box, disc, documentation and dongle... so if you want to find out of an upgrade gets you where you need to be, for a price...

cheaper than college.. just make sure you learn... by the way, how much of your time are we talking about/ what is 'fairly compensated" in your mind? I think if you learn not to design before you get a deposit, and you learn to advise clients that the time spent is what they are paying for...

To me the distinction has to be like Freds comment about "what they might contribute, outweighing any downside" (in my own words) I think a small business with small signage needs ( like the racer mentioned above) might by equipment and learn to sticker up one small line of widgets or what have...
